We believe a sustainable neighborhood is one where everyone has the opportunity to live a happy, healthy, and rewarding life. When we see others in need of assistance, we reach out and help. Our Eiber community is full of caring, compassionate people and Sustainable Eiber works to bring people together and provide opportunities to give back to our neighbors in need. Below are a few ways you can help.

Eiber Elementary School is our neighborhood elementary school. This school is dual language, with instruction in both English and
Spanish. 37% of the children attending Eiber are English language learners. The majority of the children attending Eiber Elementary are eligible for federally assisted lunch, an indicator of poverty. There is a high mobility rate at the school with some students classified as homeless.
It is well documented that the ability to read is integral to success in education, which is necessary to break the cycle of poverty. Absent fluency in reading, children are unable to keep up with classroom instructions. Academic drop out rates increase and this becomes an indicator for future incarcerations.
To help students read and succeed in life, Eiber neighborhood residents are volunteering their time to read with a child once a week for 30 minutes at the school. They also help with critical math skills, also a fundamental building block at this age.
The Eiber Reading and Math Volunteer Program takes only a small time commitment, but what it returns is priceless – an opportunity to help a child reach academic success.
The volunteer program benefits the adult volunteers as well as the children. Many adults form friendships with their paired student and it is rewarding and fun.
